Head north from Alice Springs through the vast MacDonnell Ranges. Stop at the Ti Tree Roadhouse for fuel and a pie, then continue to the Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) Conservation Reserve — a field of giant granite boulders balanced precariously on the desert plain. Camp at the excellent campground here ($6.60/person) for a magical sunset among the rocks. Continue to Tennant Creek the next morning.
Drive through the Tanami region and past the tiny settlement of Dunmarra. The landscape gradually shifts from arid red desert to greener savannah. Stop at Daly Waters Pub — one of Australia's oldest and most eccentric outback pubs. Arrive in Katherine and spend a day exploring Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, where 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River offer spectacular canoeing, hiking, and swimming.
Take the detour to Litchfield National Park — a Top End highlight with thundering waterfalls, crystal-clear swimming holes, and towering magnetic termite mounds. Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, and Buley Rockhole are must-swims. Spend a night camping in the park before completing the drive to Darwin. Arrive in the tropical capital and celebrate with sunset drinks at Mindil Beach Markets.
