The most popular route from Christchurch heads south through the Mackenzie Country — Lake Tekapo's Church of the Good Shepherd and the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki are bucket-list stops. Continue to Aoraki / Mt Cook for glacier walks, then over the Lindis Pass to Queenstown. This 480 km route takes 3-5 days at a relaxed pace.

The West Coast loop is another classic: cross the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass (one of NZ's most spectacular mountain roads), then follow the coast south past Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier, and Fox Glacier. Return via Haast Pass and Wanaka for a complete 750 km circuit over 5-7 days.

For a shorter trip, the Christchurch to Kaikōura coastal drive (180 km) is unforgettable. Stop at Hanmer Springs for natural hot pools, then continue to Kaikōura where sperm whales, dolphins, and seals are visible year-round. Many of the best freedom camping spots in Canterbury are along this route.

South Island weather can change rapidly, especially in alpine areas. Always carry warm clothing even in summer, and check road conditions before crossing mountain passes. Arthur's Pass and the Milford Road can close due to snow, ice, or slips — the NZTA website provides real-time updates.

The South Island has fewer fuel stations than the North Island, particularly on the West Coast and in Fiordland. Fill up whenever you see a station and don't let your tank drop below a quarter. Some remote stations are unmanned and card-only.

Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites are excellent value at $8-15 per night and are often in stunning locations. Book popular sites like those near Mt Cook in advance during summer. Freedom camping is available in many areas with a self-contained vehicle — the freedom camping signs are clearly marked.
