Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the main international gateway, making it the most popular starting point for campervan adventures. With multiple depot locations including Auckland Airport, picking up your campervan is effortless — you can be on the open road within an hour of landing.

From Auckland, you have the entire North Island at your doorstep. Head north to the subtropical Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga, or south through the rolling Waikato farmland to Rotorua's geothermal wonders and Hobbiton. The diversity of landscapes within a few hours' drive is staggering.

Auckland itself is worth exploring too — from the volcanic cones of Rangitoto and Mt Eden to the world-class wineries on Waiheke Island. Stock up on supplies at one of the many supermarkets, grab a flat white, and set off on the road trip of a lifetime.

The classic North Island loop from Auckland covers Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupō, Tongariro, and back — roughly 1,000 km over 7-10 days. This route hits every major highlight and is perfect for first-time visitors to New Zealand.

For a shorter trip, the Auckland to Bay of Islands run (3-5 days) is ideal. The route hugs the east coast through charming towns like Mangawhai and Whangārei before reaching the pristine waters of the Bay of Islands, where you can swim with dolphins and visit the historic Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

Don't overlook the Coromandel Peninsula — just 2.5 hours from Auckland, it offers Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, and some of New Zealand's best free camping spots. It's the perfect weekend escape or the first leg of a longer journey south.

New Zealand drives on the left side of the road, the same as Australia, so Aussie travellers will feel right at home. Roads are generally well-maintained but narrower and more winding than Australian highways — allow extra travel time and avoid driving at night in rural areas.
