For a family of four, a 4-berth hi-top campervan or mini motorhome provides a good balance of space and value, with a double bed and two single bunks. Families of five or six should consider a full-size 6-berth motorhome with more living space, a proper dining area, and usually an enclosed bathroom.
For family comfort, we generally recommend mini motorhomes or full motorhomes over hi-top campervans. They offer more storage, better climate control, and often include a bathroom — particularly valuable when travelling with young children. For a more natural experience, NSW national park campgrounds offer affordable family camping (from $6/person/night) in stunning settings. Popular family-friendly national park campgrounds include Jervis Bay, Myall Lakes, Booderee, and Lane Cove (surprisingly close to the city).
