The Pinnacles Desert near Cervantes features thousands of limestone pillars rising from yellow sand — otherworldly at sunset. Kalbarri National Park's gorges offer stunning walking trails with views over the Murchison River. At Shark Bay, the world-heritage area includes Monkey Mia's famous wild dolphins that come to shore daily.
Ningaloo Reef is the crown jewel — the world's largest fringing reef, accessible directly from the beach. Swim with whale sharks (March–July), manta rays (year-round), and turtles. Karijini's ancient gorges, with their layered iron-red rock and emerald pools, are among Australia's most spectacular natural wonders.
The Perth to Broome route is remote. Fuel stops can be 200–300km apart in sections, so never pass a fuel station without topping up. Carry at least 10 litres of emergency water per person. Mobile phone reception is patchy to non-existent between towns — download offline maps and let someone know your itinerary.
A standard 2WD campervan handles the entire main route (all sealed roads). A 4WD is only needed for Karijini's gorge access roads (some are unsealed) and optional detours. Check your hire agreement for any restricted road clauses.
May to October is the only recommended time for this route. The dry season brings warm days (25–32°C), cool nights, and zero rain. Whale shark season at Ningaloo runs March to July. Avoid November to March — extreme heat (40°C+), potential cyclones, and road closures make travel dangerous and unpleasant.
